3 STATUES TO SEE

The Kirchberg plateau has been referred to as an ‘open air art gallery’ due to the fact that most of the the big banks and institutions there have a sculpture on their doorstop. The Luxembourg City Sightseeing Bus covers them all with a detailed explanation of each. Three that stand out are…

The Stuhl

Outside of the European Investment Bank in Kirchberg sits a ginormous sculpture of a chair, designed by Czech artist Magdalena Jetelova. It signifies Luxembourg’s role as the seat of the European institutions.

The Tall Banker

Standing outside of Deka Bank is an ultra-tall banker in his suit and tie, with an umbrella and a newspaper under his arm. The 8 metre tall structure was erected in 2002 by a group of German artists named “Inges Idee” to ironically convey the “successful corporate culture”, which emphasizes growth, success, profit and optimisation. It also highlights the significance of banking and financial services within the Luxembourgish economy. Once, it was steel that was the bedrock of the economy and this is signified by a huge, steel column next to the “red bridge” (the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge) at the entrance to Kirchberg.

The Bird Cage

The big white bird cage, which illuminates at night, was designed by Su-Mei Tse et Jean-Lou Majeru. It is over five metres tall and its door is open, suggesting that the bird has flown away, having chosen freedom. The piece encourages us to take flight, to break free of the mundane and to take detours in our lives.
