Saarschleife
Less than an hour’s drive away from Luxembourg, following a short but beautiful nature trail, you can have a breath-taking view of the Saar river’s hairpin bend from atop a huge wooden platform. It is Europe’s answer to the US’ Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado River in Arizona.

Trier
About one hour away from Luxembourg by train, in the Moselle wine region, is the German city of Trier. It is a lovely city for shopping and strolling as well as sightseeing. Founded by the Romans, it contains several well-preserved Roman structures like the Porta Nigra gate. The Cathedral of Trier contains the skull of St. Helena and the ‘Seamless Robe of Jesus’ which is said to have been worn by Jesus before his crucifixion. There is also the house where Karl Marx was born in 1818. For a healthy lunch, Liebling (meaning Darling in English), a pretty restauarant with one wall carpeted in pink flowers, is a good option. They use local, seasonal produce and buy many of their ingredients from a nearby plastic-free supermarket. At the opposite end of the spectrum, you could try Himmel und Erde (Heaven and Earth), a famous dish in the Rhineland region of Germany. It consists of black pudding, potatoes (from the earth) and apple sauce (apples from the sky/ Heaven).

Idar-Oberstein
This was once a gemstone capital of the world and you can still visit the crystal mines. After mining became expensive in Europe, many inhabitants emigrated to Brazil. They brought back beautiful, rare and colourful stones which are now on display in the town’s museums. They also brought back Brazilian culinary culture and now, you can find restaurants offering mouth-watering Brazilian assado (barbecue).

“The Dinosaur Foot”

Carnelian – From the latin word “carne” because it looks like a piece of red meat.
