3 DAY TRIPS INSIDE OF LUXEMBOURG

Petite Suisse

The Mullerthal Region is coined as Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland because of its beautiful, hilly landscape. Predefined trails through this fairy-tale-like setting take you past various rock formations, waterfalls and breath-taking views.

Vianden

This picturesque town in the North of Luxembourg is particularly popular in summer for  its outdoor swimming pool that looks on to its famous medieval castle. Here, there is also the house where Victor Hugo lived during his exile in 1871. It is now a literary museum now holds a collection of his documents, writings and drawings. A calendar highlight is the annual ‘Veiner Nëssmoort’ (nut market) which is normally held in October. Here, you can sample and buy almost everything you can imagine made with walnuts – liqueur, bread, cakes, biscuits…

Schengen

On the banks of the Moselle, in South-East Luxembourg, sits a tiny village with a huge significance: Schengen. Here, the borders of three countries meet – France, Germany and Luxembourg. The little wine-making village lends its name to the ‘Schengen Agreements’ which permit the free movement of people throughout the EU. When these were signed in 1990 on board the MS Princesse Marie-Astrid, it signified the beginning of the implementation of one of the four fundamental liberties that had been fixed by the Treaty of Rome of 1957. There is not a lot to see, but if its sunny, it’s a beautiful walk along the banks of the river. Many people have attached love-locks to the padlock monument. You can buy these at the Tourist Information centre.
