3 DAY TRIPS TO FRANCE

Nancy

Nancy as a name just sounds pretty and indeed the city doesn’t disappoint on this front. Reachable by train from Luxembourg’s Gare Centrale, Nancy offers lots to see whether it be the 18th Century Place Stanislas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or its high-calibre art museums. If you go, I recommend a breakfast bagel at Kensington Coffee (named after a famous coffee-shop district of Toronto) and dinner at La Bouche à Oreille which offers typical Alsation dishes from tartiflette to fondue to the famous œuf cocotte, which the uniting theme through all being CHEESE. The vintage décor creates a special ambience, and the gilded, odd-shaped picture frames spread from the walls across the ceiling. I felt like I was in Uncle Albert’s house in Mary Poppins,  where everything is held up by laughter and a happy atmosphere.

Metz

This is a beautiful, quintessentially French city about one hour from Luxembourg by train. It’s great for shopping, but it also has some must-see sights whether it be the Centre Pompidou or the Cathedral of Saint Stephen, which has one of the highest naves in the world and windows painted by Chagall himself.

For some sweet souvenirs, visit Bourguignon, a pâtisserie and chocolatier famous for its powder blue “Gyspsy” sweets – a hazelnut and almond praline wrapped in meringue. However, there are over 40 flavours to choose from, some based on the local speciality – Mirabelle peaches.

Colmar

A little bit further afar, Colmar is about four hours away by train. It is a fairytale city, especially the old town with its cobblestone streets and pastel-coloured buildings. Don’t miss the Little Venice area by the river and be sure to take a glass of Riesling or Gewürztraminer, which hail from the surrounding region. From Colmar, a short bus journey will take you to Riquewihr. Situated between the peaks of the Vosges mountains, this picturesque, medieval town served as the inspiration for Belle’s village in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.
