MY 3 FAVOURITE ICE CREAMS IN LUX

Luxembourg, like everywhere, seems to be experiencing increasingly warmer weather. In 2020, we had the “sunniest spring on record” according to Météolux. Without the sea close by, summer in the city is pretty hot and sticky. Here are my favourite chilled treats to cool down with:

BARGELLO

Bargello is the place to have traditional ice cream. Given that ice cream as we know it (made with milk and sugar) originates from Florence when the Medici reigned, it is apt that this gelateria takes its name from the famous Florentine Palace, the Bargello. The ice-cream is made the old-fashioned way under the watchful eye of owner and founder Madame Fontani. Artificial flavourings and colouring are shunned in favour of high quality ingredients like Bronte pistachios from Sicily and vanilla from Madagascar. Everything from Bargello is delicious but my personal favourite is the Pan di Stelle ice cream sandwich.

CHAMPAGNE SORBET FROM HÔTEL SIEWEBUREN

This place place is a little bit off the map, down in Rollingergrund at the edge of the Bambesch forest. Hansel and Gretel would not be disappointed with their long list of ice-creams, sorbets and desserts, from which my long-time favourite is the champagne sorbet. If Luxembourg was a dessert, it would be this one.

ANNA AND PAUL GLACERIE

This ice cream parlour, founded in Bologna, originally opened in Bertrange but now, there is conveniently a branch right in the city centre. It’s as if they play spin-the-flavour-wheel when coming up with their unsual and unique flavours such as Aperol, Acai, Kellogg’s Frosties, avocado and lime or gorgonzola, honey and walnut, but it works out well. It is always nice to be surprised by new flavours.
